Hologram Room is a mixed reality experience space that offers visitors a chance to engage in a range of holographic and XR activities. At the request of several international telecommunications companies, my team created an interactive XR experience space that allowed the general public to explore various field use cases for the company's XR solution.

During a three-month period in 2019 (prior to the pandemic), I designed and developed an XR application for Hololens 2 using MRTK and Unity. Additionally, I played a key role in curating and setting up the venue, and following the opening, I engaged closely with visitors through guided tours, interviews, and collecting feedback and insights on the XR solution.

Designing a shared experience XR application for Hololens2

The app was created to showcase the potential applications of XR technology across various industries. After conducting initial research, I identified four industries that were particularly well-suited for demonstrating XR use cases: education, medicine, real estate, and tourism.

Primary User:

The primary users of Hologram Room are walk-in visitors who had never tried XR glasses before, as the purpose of the application was to introduce XR technology to the public.

The Problem:

One major hindrance to adopting the technology was that most first-time users had difficulty learning the proper hand gestures for the XR device (Hololens2), which caused frustration and made it more challenging for them to explore and navigate the app.

The Solution:

To ease users' frustration and guide them to the exciting world of XR technology, I designed the app with mini content scenes packaged as module types for each use case scenario. I also created an XR navigation button to allow users to easily tap and shift through each scene and content. This solution aimed to simplify the user experience and make it more accessible for new users to explore and learn about XR technology.

Curation & Installation

The MR space was curated with a minimalistic approach, creating a dramatic contrast when visitors donned the Hololens2. The team's focus was not solely on the physical space, but also on the virtual objects that would augment it.

This required careful consideration of the optimal flow of each station, ensuring that visitors could enjoy each experience without distraction from overlapping objects or other visitors.
